Endangered Red Lilies

Liliumphiladelphicumis more commonly referred to as either the Wood Lily or the Philadelphia Lily and has been fighting for survival in some States. Though this plant should be found throughout every eastern and central State, in Maryland, Tennessee, North Carolina and New Mexico the status of the Philadelphia lily is “endangered” and in Kentucky and Ohio it is on the “threatened” list of plants. Efforts are being made to preserve the plant and the harvest of it in these States comes with a heavy fine. In the Canadian Province of Saskatchewan, the Wood lily is actually the Provincial flower and is featured on the Saskatchewan flag. Since 1941, the plant has been protected in Saskatchewan under the Candian Provincial Emblems and Honours Act. Among the other varieties of red lilies, the Philadelphia lily is said to produce a red or orange bloom between the months of June and August and will grow roughly three feet tall on average.

Red Lilies: Natural Habitat

As lilies are resilient to many factors that otherwise stave plants off from living virtually anywhere, the red lilies follow suit and are found in North America as well as throughout Asia. While the Philadelphia lily only grows wild across Canada and the US, there are Asian varieties with strange common names like the Giraffe lily or the Blackout lily. These are hybrids of lily species that grow throughout areas of Asia where they’d never had a chance to cross-pollinate until the hand of florists got involved. Giraffe lilies are red at the tip of their petals and yellow towards the base – they don’thave markings or spots like the Tiger lily. The Blackout lily is a glossy, burgundy/ fuscia-colored flower.
