Among the plants across the world there aren’t many that have adapted and spread to almost every inhabitable continent though lilies have. Popular Types of Lilies
If there were one type of lily that’s made its presence here in the States best known among its relatives, it would have to be the Calla lily. These lilies have an identifiable, trumpet-like snout and they feel waxy. Calla lilies have a delightful fragrance and are often found in white, though reds and pinks are available also. Curiously, the lilium genus that accounts for most lily species isn’t even the genus of this species of “lily”! Nonetheless, the Calla lily has been widely accepted as a lily and it represents sentiments of purity, which make it ideal for somber funerals and for joyous weddings. Two other very popular types of lilies in the States are Tiger lilies and Easter lilies. Tiger lilies are orange with dark strips and spots. These smell sweet though are more often found wild than given as gifts or used for floral arrangements as they carry negative stigma when compared to their pink or white brethren. They’re easy to grow and they are closer in appearance to some star lilies than those with trumpet-like petals. Easter lilies are stark white and they are quickly identified with purity and springtime. They’re also attractively fragrant.
Lesser Known Lily Varieties
Just two examples of lesser known varieties of lilies include the Stargazer lily and the dragon lily. The Stargazer isn’t well known because the hybrid had only first been developed in the late ‘70’s. They have made quite a stir as they’re extremely bright and feature many varieties of color and markings. Dragon lilies are extremely unique plants that, like the Calla lily, aren’t true lilies. These plants feature only a couple purple leaves called spathes and an even deeper purple spadix, which is like a jutting spike of fleshy plant material. While as unique as they may be, dragon lilies often don’t make it indoors because of their noxious odor which has been reported to smell like a decaying carcass.
